Fairfax County Building Code Changes
Changes are being considered in Fairfax County's building code in an effort to solve a couple of problems plaguing some neighborhoods. The county wants to close what some say is a loophole that has allowed outsized homes to be built on lots without meeting water, sewer and electrical system requirements.
According to officials, some builders have been able to get renovation permits for their projects by preserving the foundation of a demolished structure or saving one or two walls.
Officials say that's led to construction of so-called "McMansions" in many county neighborhoods.
One modification under consideration would cap renovation construction at about 150 percent of the demolished home's original footprint. Homes constructed following demolition of more than 50 percent of an existing house would require new construction permits.
Officials say new controls could also help stop overcrowding in houses in some county neighborhoods.
